The Sun Peaks Alpine Club provides exciting and challenging on and off-snow programs for young ski racers all the way from Nancy Greene Ski League to top level Provincial competitors. Part of our ongoing commitment to serve the needs of our members includes the development and implementation of such programs that address every individual’s needs within the club and team environment.
As is often the case in youth sports, competition categories are established according to gender and chronological age. In our training however, we utilize our resources so that athletes are grouped according to their ability as much as possible. To this end, our training groups will vary with respect to age and coaching so that each athlete gets the attention and direction we feel they need to further their development.
Ages 10, 11, 12
The K1 Program is the first category of "carded"( tracked and ranked in canada) alpine ski racing, nationwide, . This is the natural transition from the Nancy Greene Ski League. Children further increase their ability in the ABC'S (agility, balance, coordination, strength/speed) and continue to grow lasting friendships. Skiing days consist of free-skiing exploration on all types of terrain and in all conditions, free-skiing with technical focus, and gate training such as dual races, obstacle races, and slalom and giant slalom.
Children are encouraged to attend all training sessions to help coaches maintain the program flow. The primary focus of the K1 Program is to increase technical skill while learning the basics of how to train as a ski racer - in a fun atmosphere of friends and light competition.
Dryland training is 2 times per week starting in September.
Ages 13, 14, 15
The K2 Program is the next step up and a natural progression from the K1 Program. Children increase their technical skill and widen their knowledge base in the sport of alpine ski racing. All-mountain skiing skills are maintained yet the focus is more on refining technical skill utilizing free-skiing exercises and gate training.
Under coach guidance, K2s are encouraged to set goals and strive for personal growth. Ski technique, racing skills, and strong mind & body are taught in this exciting program for youth.
Ages 16 & up
At 16 you have the option to keep racing and get a FIS card or just race for fun. We at SPAC encourage all our racers to keep going and race until they are 95. There are Provincial teams, Development teams, University teams with Scholarships, and National teams to strive for!
Once you get a FIS Card you are registered world wide. www.fis-ski.com. FIS racers start with 999 points and try to lose them by racing in sanctioned FIS races in each discipline. The lower your points are the higher you are ranked world wide ( 1 obviously being the best) . For example Sun Peaks Alpine Club alumni racer Elli Terwiel currently has 9 Slalom points, this ranks her 60th in the world in Slalom. The lists come out 12 times a season and are constantly updated from skiers scoring points around the world. This program further develops the young athletes on and off snow and teaches a lot of useful life skills besides the on snow part of the program. There is opportunities to travel all over canada and the world learning and gaining experience and friends that lasts a life time.
The new season approaches and with everyone’s commitment it promises to be the best ever for Masters racing at Sun Peaks.
As a Masters racer you can compete at all Masters events, as well as Kinder events in our Zone. We cannot join the “Zone Final” races.
For example there is a Kinder (K1/K2) Slalom race at Apex Mountain in December:
Sun Peaks is hosting a Giant Slalom race January 14-15 that will be fun. Full details of all the races this ski season are listed at the BC Alpine website: http://bcalpine.com/calendar/
The Alpine Canada Masters website explains the different types of Competitors numbers:
